Quaker Chemical Corporation, or Quaker, is a global provider of chemical specialities, process fluids and technical expertise for a number of industries, including mining, quarries and heavy equipment manufacturing.
“Quaker Chemical is a well-established company and we’ve been representing them for some time. For the mining industry, they specialise in dust suppression chemicals,” explains Allen Haywood, president of Carroll Technologies, North America’s supplier of Quaker products.
Quakers range of products includes longwall fluids, fire-resistant and speciality hydraulic fluids, gear lubricants, storage fluids, water-soluble gels and industrial greases. For mining applications, their dust suppression solutions are particularly important for reducing dust generation of airborne particulate matter in dust-prone areas, creating a more breathable atmosphere and reducing the risk of fire.
Dust suppression is essential. Underground mine workers are at risk of developing pneumoconiosis due to regular exposure to airborne respirable dust. Between 2007 and 2016, lung disease has been an underlying or contributing cause of death for 4,118 miners.
According to Haywood: “One of the most popular products that we supply for them is the Mine Foam, which is used to spray into areas to make a solid seal to control airflow in underground mining applications.”
Minetech Q-foam spray polyurethane (016671BOX0201) is available through Carrol and is always kept in stock at their seven distribution centres across the US.
“Mine Foam is very easy to use and is more efficient that its competitors,” Haywood adds. “Operators let us know how much they use a month so we can arrange to have regular shipments sent to them around their schedule.”
The disposable, closed-cell spray foam kit is applied using low-pressure dispersion equipment and consists of two chemical components. The foam creates an airtight seal around mine ventilation devices to improve efficiency, expanding six-ten times its original volume and becoming tack-free within 30 seconds.
